The Former Customs House is a stuccoed structure erected from 1873, to designs presumably by the Public Works Department of Victoria, to serve as a Custome House, offices and residence. The double storey, symmetrical main facade has single storey porches at each end, repeating the arched window motif. The Geelong Customs House was built in 1856 by Melbourne contractor W G Cornish, replacing earlier structures of 1838 and 1845 on the Customs Reserve. The design of this colonial georgian style three storey structure can be attributed to colonial architect James Balmain assisted by Edward Davidson, Clerk of Works. A simple bluestone Customs House of 1860 -61, in good condition and with a somewhat unusual open-work timber verandah valence employing eliptical motifs. The present old Customs House replaced an earlier structure constructed in 1844 on the other side of Gipps Street. The present building was erected in 1860-61 by the builders Cox & Co. from locally quarried basalt. The timber verandah was added in 1866.
